What is the deal?

How is it that people can get so excited about the murder of one man? We killed a symbol. He wasn't even a man at this point, and it seemed like an after thought, unnecessary. I don't understand why people got so excited and acted like it meant anything, this murder? They were acting like their lives would improve, jobs would be created, the clouds had lifted. I don't get it.
